Grad Profile: Joy Lopez

“DML courses are built on theories of learning that encourage collegial dialogue and sharing of problems and solutions. Students work together to solve problems and design projects. DML Practicum is one course that really allows you to stretch your wings and try new projects with a group of middle school students. Later you are allowed time to reflect on your practice and discuss your work with your colleagues in the class. What a wonderful experience to feel so supported in your teaching!”

Educational Goals

  • Building relationships with students and their families
  • Identifying student and parent expectations leading students to achieve their goals and reach their dreams.
  • Modeling, designing, and implementing inquiry based science education.
  • Designing and facilitating virtual learning communities.
  • Guiding per-service teachers as they journey toward their career goals.

If you're interested in finding out what you can do with a degree from the DML program, look no further than Joy Lopez. Since graduating from the DML in 1999, Joy has embarked upon multiple professional paths. A former technology coordinator at Holy Spirit School in Fremont, she now heads the K-8 Science Department at Holy Spirit while continuing to train and support school faculty in educational technology applications. In 2002, Joy co-founded Visions In Education College Prep Academy, a virtual project-based high school for at-risk students. In this program, Joy taught high school science using various technology tools. Joy has worked as an adjunct at both St. Mary's and at USF teaching various technology and teacher education courses.

Joy received her Ed. D. in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University in 2005. This fall Joy joined the USF School of Education as an assistant professor. She teaches Teaching, Learning, and Technology, Learning and Teaching, Curriculum and Instruction: Single-subject Science and math, and Professional Portfolio courses. In these courses, Joy uses her knowledge of technology and technology integration to help prepare pre-service teachers to meet the challenges of teaching 21st century skills to the students of today.
