Purpose

DML Practicum I & II exemplify and embody the philosophy of integration of educational technology into school curriculum, and infuses both the Teacher Education Program and the Masters of Arts in Digital Media and Learning. This course seeks to develop the practical skills, capacities, and strategies in both beginning and experienced teachers to create technology rich classrooms.

Design

DML Practicum utilizes a project based approach. Within a framework of collegiality and collaboration students are challenged to do the following.
  1. To create a comprehensive tool-kit of skills, resources, and strategies to effectively implement technology in their teaching.
  2. To deliver real time lessons to participating middle school students utilizing digital technologies.
  3. To develop digital products that are contextually relevant and meaningful to K-12 classrooms.

The Golden Mean (Curriculum Unit)
An exploration of the laws of mathematics in nature, architecture, and history: Middle to High School

Why Do We Need Food (Curriculum Unit)
We all need food to survive, but is that all it is? A function of survival? This may be true for some, but food has come to mean so much more: Intermediate to Middle School

Exploring the Solar System (Curriculum Unit)
Students travel through a virtual cosmos and orbital space colony that we will enter in the annual contest held by NASA: High School

Hip Hop History and Beyond (Curriculum Unit)
Students learn more about the history of Hip-Hop! Along the way they " rap," mix their own record and graffiti their own wall: Middle to High School

Exploring the US Mint (Curriculum Unit)
As students investigate the Mint's history and 50 State Quarters program, they design their own digital state quarter: Intermediate to Middle School

Chinese Immigration (Curriculum Unit)
This history of Chinese immigration to the U.S. explores how the Chinese influenced and contributed to important events in California history: Intermediate Grades

Hoop History (Curriculum Unit)
Students journey into the NBA, learn about the history of the "game," design team logos, and go on a virtual field trip: Intermediate to Middle School

Note: Curriculum units are the "capstone" products of students enrolled in DML Practicum. Designed in digital format to compliment K -12 curricula, they mirror existing classroom activities and lessons, and explore specific themes. Each unit integrates a suite of online activities, resources, and links, and incorporates standard lesson features including activity introduction, objectives, process, and assessment.
