Spotlight Teacher: Dr. Linda Shore

“People learn best by constructing knowledge for themselves. The role of the teacher is to facilitate this process for students, which is exactly what I do when teaching my technology classes. During each session, I coach students as they engage in a technology-based, inquiry lesson that helps build understanding and develop their skills as leaders in technology education.”
Hands on Learning within inquiry-based instructional environments goes straight to the heart of Dr. Linda Shore's educational philosophy; it also drive powerfully the pedagogy she herself employs in teaching graduate students in the DML program and School of Education. Her Constructivism and Technology course is an ever popular and dynamic mainstay of the DML program.

In addition to her duties as adjunct professor in the DML program, Dr. Shore is a staff physicist and the Director of the Teacher Institute at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. For years she has worked with middle school and high school math and science teachers throughout the Bay Area to enrich their own classrooms.

The author of The Science Explorer, a series of Exploratorium activity books for children and their parents, Linda has also been involved with a number of educational projects including the Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project and Harvard University's "Project STAR", a hands-on astronomy curriculum that addresses student misconceptions.

“Dr. Shore's classes are as engaging and as exciting as any you will find in the DML Program. Every class percolates with experiential exercises and demonstrations. Not only has she equipped me with the skill sets to create my own learning centered classroom, but has convinced me that "constructivism" is not just good theory but wonderful classroom practice that engages all learners.”
