Special Education Program
Consistent with the University's mission and Jesuit tradition, the Mild/Moderate Education Specialist Credential Program is guided by the belief that all individuals with special needs have the right to be educated by highly qualified teachers in order to develop their optimal potential and become productive, participating members of society. The primary mission of the program is to prepare special educators who can work effectively with students with mild-moderate disabilities in diverse, urban environments. The program’s goal is to recruit, prepare, and support teachers who will make a difference in the lives of their students.
In California, the field of special education has been experiencing a drastic shortage of qualified teachers for many years. Thanks to new diagnostics and increased public awareness, the number of students receiving special education services is growing at an increased pace, making the shortage even worse. All too often, teachers with the least training are placed with the neediest students. Our goal is to alleviate this shortage by training specialists who can become leaders in their field. Our graduates are respected among their peers as experts who accept responsibility for ensuring a quality education for students with mild/moderate disabilities, with particular concern for those in central city environments.
