What makes this program great?

  • Two Years to a Teaching Credential and Master's Degree
    All requirements needed to obtain your California Education Specialist Credential with Mild/Moderate Authorization and Master of Arts Degree in Learning and Instruction can be completed in the two-year program, including summers.

  • Earn While You Learn with a Full-Time Teacher's Salary
    You will be earning the full salary and benefits offered by your school district as a mild/moderate special education teacher while you attend USF. Job placement assistance is provided in the program. Coursework is relevant, practical, job-related, and is based on current models of education and research.

  • Extensive Support and Mentoring
    A full-time faculty member will be your program advisor. In addition, doctoral students will provide you with one-on-one and small group mentoring. The fieldwork coordinator can help you secure a job and complete all credential requirements. On the job, you will have a Fieldwork Supervisor and a District Support Provider to help you with your classroom and other job needs.

  • Evening Courses
    After the initial summer courses, classes take place on Wednesday evenings.  In addition, during the first year, you attend 4 all-day Saturday classes.

  • Small Class Size
    Cohort groups average 20 to 30 students, with the faculty and staff dedicated to supporting you and assuring your success.

  • Support for Testing Required by the State
    Classes and study materials are available to help you prepare for the RICA and other tests mandated for the teaching credential.

  • Technology Integration
    You will learn to use educational and adaptive technologies that are integrated into the curriculum.

  • Hands-on and Activity-Based Learning
    In class you participate in a variety of engaging activities, problem solving, and other hands-on, small group experiences designed to be useful to you as you teach your students.
