Learning and Instruction Doctoral Program

As a doctoral student in Learning and Instruction (L&I), you will experience small classes and skillful instruction delivered by expert faculty within a diverse and supportive learning environment. This program has been specifically created to develop the next generation of leaders who are prepared for:

  1. Teaching, research, and administrative positions in colleges and universities.
  2. Positions of educational leadership in public and private schools and state education departments, and as health administrators.
  3. Careers as consultants, trainers, and researchers in education, business, the allied health professions, and corporate environments.
Coursework in the Learning and Instruction doctoral program focuses on three substantive areas:
  1. The learner, including courses such as Human Abilities, Motivation, Creativity, and the Architecture of Learning.
  2. Instructional environments that support the learner, including courses such as Models of Teaching, Essentials of Teaching in Higher Education, and Performance-Based Assessment.
  3. Methodological expertise in Research Design, Measurement, and Data Analysis.

The doctoral program consists of 60 credit hours of study beyond the master’s degree and culminates in completion of a doctoral dissertation. Students can elect to organize their coursework in an emphsasis area. Emphasis areas include Urban Multicultural Special Education, Higher Education, Research Methodologies, and Leaders in Allied Health Care. Considerable flexibility is provided for the student and advisor to design a program of study consistent with the student’s intellectual and professional goals and interests.

A survey was recently conducted by the National Association of Graduate School Professionals to examine educational practices in doctoral progams across the U.S. Over 32,000 students from 1,300 doctoral programs responded to the survey. The USF doctoral program in Learning and Instruction was rated as outstanding in numerous areas including: Teaching Excellence, Supportive Program Climate, Student Mentoring, Recruitment of Students from Underrepresented Groups, Strong Research Practices, and Effective Advisement.
