International and Multicultural Education
Our Programs
The programs in IME are designed for those seeking to enhance their professional knowledge and understanding of diverse groups, and skills in cross-cultural communication, bilingual education, second language acquisition and children's literature. The programs focus on educational issues with specific concern for the socio-cultural needs of our multifaceted, democratic society and on education for inclusion. They further seek to promote recognition and respect for the diversity extant in our democratic society.
The goals of the programs are to provide:
- Educational experiences that emphasize and encourage leadership, ethical responsibility and service to all communities
- Focused areas of study in the cultural, linguistic, philosophical and sociological development of Asian American, Latin American, African American and other linguistic and cultural groups at all educational levels
- Knowledge of global issues of education
- Opportunities for students to develop an awareness of their personal beliefs, values and experiences in order to better appreciate those of others.
Spotlight Program
Human Rights Education Emphasis
M.A. / Ed.D. Programs in International & Multicultural Education
"Human rights education (HRE) is an international movement to promote awareness about the rights accorded by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and related human rights conventions, and the procedures that exist for the redress of violations of these rights." (Amnesty International, 2005; Reardon, 1995; Tibbitts, 1996).
The HRE emphasis provides students with an understanding of the vital role of education in promoting and securing Human Rights. Students critically examine legal, social, political, gendered, and racial impacts on Human Rights. Students gain valuable tools to help them incorporate Human Rights Education into their own research, teaching, and work. The emphasis is comprised of four courses (12 units; see program outline):
- International Human Rights Law for Educators,
- Gender and Globalization,
- Human Rights Education, and
- Immigration & Forced Displacement.
Human Rights Education (HRE) is a relatively new field of study, and USF is proud to be the first university in the U.S. to offer such an emphasis. |
