Doctorate in IME

The Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in International and Multicultural Education (IME) is comprised of 60 units:

• 12 units are from the General Education curriculum;
• 24 units are from the student's major specialization in International and Multicultural Education;
• 12-15 units are from elective courses;
• 9-12 units are for dissertation proposal development, research and writing.

Note | Students may choose to use their elective units to develop a minor with a sequence of at least four related courses from another School of Education program, approved by the IME advisor and the minor advisor. The student must file a Petition to Declare a Minor form with the Dean's office.

Phase One | Acceptance and Conditional Admittance to the IME Doctoral Program

All students are conditionally admitted to the Doctoral Program until the successful completion of the portfolio. Prior to the start of their first semester, newly admitted students are expected to attend the orientation session, meet with their advisor and register for classes.

Courses for the Portfolio for Full Admittance | 12 units

Required General Education course:

• GEDU 708 - Research Methods in Education

Core IME doctoral courses for the portfolio: Students choose 3 of the following:

• IME 702 - Research in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education
• IME 704 - International Perspectives on Area Studies
• IME 712 - Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Identity
• IME 714 - Multicultural Perspectives in Education
• IME 718 - International Human Rights Law for Educators

Phase Two | Continuation of Coursework, Proposal Seminar & Preparation for the IME Qualifying Presentation

Students continue to complete General Education, IME major and elective coursework. See listing of IME courses with course descriptions. Courses offered in any of the School of Education's doctoral or master's programs may be used to fulfill the elective units. For information on available courses, please go to the School's department pages or see the USF General Catalog.

After completion of a minimum of 30 units of coursework and the GEDU prerequisites:

• IME 709 - Dissertation Proposal Seminar
  Prerequisites: GEDU - 706, GEDU - 708 and one General Education Foundations course. The essentials of developing a model proposal for the research project leading to a dissertation. Specific components of a good proposal, analysis of research proposals, and student research projects.

The following course is strongly recommended as an elective after 709 is completed:

• IME 729 - Proposal Development
  Continuation of proposal development. Specific components of a proposal, analysis of research proposals, and student research projects.

Phase Three | Formation of the Student's Dissertation Committee and Proposal Development

After completion of a minimum of 45 units of coursework:

• IME 790 - Dissertation Proposal Development
  Directed proposal development in consultation with dissertation committee.

Phase Four | Advancement to Candidacy, Dissertation Research, Writing and Defense

After completion of a minimum of 51 units of coursework:

• IME 791 - Dissertation Research and Writing
  The design, preparation, and writing of the dissertation research study in consultation with the dissertation committee. Advancement to candidacy required.
