Master of Arts in Teaching with a Preliminary Single or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential


The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is comprised of 30 units from the courses below.


Credential Course Work | 24 units
Students enrolled in the MAT Program are required to complete one of the following Teaching Credential Programs:

Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential with or without an optional Bilingual Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) emphasis in Filipino or Spanish.

Preliminary Single Subject Credential with or without an optional Bilingual Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) emphasis in Filipino or Spanish.

Up to 24 units from credential coursework, for which a grade of B or better was earned, may be applied towards the Master of Arts in Teaching degree.


Required Courses | 6 units
All MAT students must take one of the following two courses:

Methodology of Educational Research
An introduction to the process and methods of educational research and to developing a preliminary plan or proposal for research in the field.

Practitioner Research
Practitioner Research provides background in the theory and practice of conducting inquiry-based research in one's own classroom, school or educational setting with the objective of developing a plan of action. This course is designed to train students to identify a problem at their site, to investigate this problem through a review of the literature, and to conduct a field project using appropriate research methodology.

The following course is required:

Master's Thesis - Field Project
A field-based thesis or project on an approved topic related to education which is submitted as a formal report in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the master's degree.
