Importing Data from External Sources

If you are familiar with navigation in SPSS and want to learn how to import data into SPSS, you are in the right place. If you have not worked with SPSS before, it is recommended that you learn some navigation techniques before proceeding (click here to do so). For all users, it is suggested that you have SPSS running concurrently while working through this section.

To transfer data from an external source into SPSS for data analysis, following these procedures:

  1. Open an SPSS file.
  2. On the File menu, select Open, then Data.
  3. Locate and highlight the file which you wish to import, and click "open".
  4. A dialog box will appear. If you're importing from Excel, it will read "Opening Excel Data Source". Click OK and your data will be imported into SPSS.
